To quote one of our senator’s famous outburst here:
I am not angry. I am irate. I am foaming in the mouth. I am homicidal. I am suicidal. I am humiliated, debased, degraded.
That is what I exactly feel upon learning the shutdown of library.nu, formerly Gigapedia. I’ve been getting all those scholarly and interesting books, journals, etc. from this website for almost three years. To learn that it has been finally shut down due to grounds of piracy is stupid. This article from Al-Jazeera pretty much sums up my sentiment:
The world, it should not come as a surprise, is filled with people who want desperately to learn. This is what our world should be filled with. This is what scholars work hard to create: a world of reading, learning, thinking and scholarship. The users of library.nu were would-be scholars: those in the outer atmosphere of learning who wanted to know, argue, dispute, experiment and write just as those in the universities do.
Yes, I got a fair load of books from the site —- from fashion books (e.g. McQueen, Chanel, Lanvin, Dior) to French comic books (e.g. Les Aventures de Tintin) to important, locally-unavailable international studies textbooks and seminal works by the world’s greatest IR thinkers! Since I got my Kindle, I got more hooked in reading! I always believe that reading is a great escape and it is an excellent source of knowledge.
I miss library.nu so much… now that it is officially CLOSED, let me get back to Tumblr once I’m done crying myself to sleep. Just kidding.
